It seems every other phone call we had today was a client asking "what is this bacteria I keep hearing about!?!" There have been 50 confirmed cases of Leptospirosis in Arizona in the last few months. Leptospirosis (Lepto) is bacteria that is spread through an infected animal's urine. It is passed to a uninfected animal through mucus membranes (think sniffing the ground) or drinking and swimming in contaminated water. Although rare it can also be spread to humans that come in contact with infected pets. Dogs that attend dog parks, doggie day care, or that go camping, swimming, hiking frequently are at the highest risk of coming in contact with the Lepto bacteria. With the recent confirmed cases we are recommending pets be vaccinated against the bacteria. Our appointments are booking fast so please give us a call at 480-945-8484 to schedule an appointment!
