The Sanitation Districts function on a regional scale and consist of 24 independent special districts severing about million people in Los Angeles County. Our service area covers approximately 850 square miles and encompasses 78 cities and unincorporated county areas.
Approximately 1,410 miles of sewers, 48 active pumping plants, and 11 wastewater treatment plants convey and treat about half the wastewater in Los Angeles County. Our solid waste facilities meet about one-fourth of the countywide solid waste management needs. We operate two active and four closed sanitary landfills, three landfill energy recovery facilities, three materials recovery/transfer facilities, one recycle center, and participate in the operation of two refuse-to-energy facilities.
In 2014, the Sanitation Districts produced over 102,000 acre-feet of recycled water, which is reused at more than 750 sites. We now produce more recycled water that is beneficially reused than any other single recycled water producer in the United States. The Sanitation Districts also recycled over 43,000 tons of commodities. And our wastewater and solid waste operations generate approximateoly 120 megawatts of electricity - enough meet the power needs of about 160,000 Southern California homes.
