10th & M Seafoods began as a mink farm in 1938 and the freezers then held mink food. In 1943, the company began renting freezer space to Anchorage's hunters and fishermen for storage of wild game and fish. Today the minks are long gone, but 10th & M still rents out 500 lockers for wild game and fish storage, and it also offers custom processing of moose, caribou and bear.
We still do custom seafood packaging and shipping for individual customers, as we did in the beginning. In the late 1970's, airlines were developing better ways to ship perishables. Working with Flying Tigers, the air cargo company, 10th & M helped pioneer the shipping of fresh seafood from Alaska. The first shipments went out Christmas of 1980. When Federal Express Corp., bought out Flying Tigers and built it's Alaska Air Cargo hub, 10th & M helped them develop better containers for shipping fresh seafood. Since that time, the air shipment portion of our business has grown rapidly.
In addition to our active and growing retail market, we also process and ship Alaskan seafood to European, Japanese and US markets, specializing in salmon and halibut steaks, fillets, smoked products, and unique products like ikura salmon egg caviar, which is exported to Japan. We also import fresh exotic seafoods from the US East Coast, the Gulf of Mexico, and from Hawaii for wholesale distribution to Alaskan restaurants, to cruise ships berthing here, specialty caterers, as well as numerous major grocery chains throughout the US and UK.
