Before there was a "Forest City", there was "Burnt Chimney," named for the blackened chimney left standing after an 1855 fire destroyed James McArthur's home. The area around the chimney became the drill ground for the Burnt Chimney Volunteers, 125 men who comprised Company D, 16th North Carolina Regiment, in the Confederate Army. In 1877, the town was incorporated as "Burnt Chimney". But town leaders felt the name lacked dignity. The name was changed to "Forest City" in 1887. Years ago, Forest City grew to a population sufficient to become a city, however, citizens of the town cast their votes to retain their "town" status.
