Say goodbye to Summer (at 4:02 pm EDT), in the northern hemisphere, that is. Astronomically, the September equinox is the autumnal, or fall, equinox marking the end of summer and the beginning of fall (autumn). The fall season ends on December Solstice, when astronomical winter begins. However, popular culture in North America associates Labor Day, the first Monday in September, as the end of summer and the start of autumn. As daytime and nighttime temperatures decrease, trees begin to shed their leaves. But not before putting on a fantastic show of colors.

National Ice Cream Cone Day is observed annually on September 22 in the U.S. While there is some controversy as to who invented the ice cream cone, one of the earliest mentions of them showed up in French cookbooks around 1825. Ice cream cones first became popular in the United States in the late 1800s. Confectioners turned the first cones by hand. The ice cream cone made its debut at the World’s Fair in St. Louis in 1904. In 1912, an inventor from Oregon obtained a patent for a machine to make them. He sold his company to Nabisco in 1928, and they still make ice cream cones today. The ice cream cone continues to be a popular treat for children and adults alike as more flavors of ice cream continue to be made available to please our palates. In the United States, Air Products’ Freshline® liquid nitrogen freezing systems help ice cream companies freeze all sorts of sweet treats like ice cream sandwiches and ice cream cones.
