The Meyer Center was founded in 1954 by Dr. Leslie C. Meyer, one of the first pediatric orthopedic surgeons in the Upstate. In his work at Shriner's Hospital, Dr. Meyer witnessed daily the need for educational services for children with disabilities. At that time, the public school system was not required to provide services. Dr. Meyer’s leadership and dedication resulted in the establishment of a school providing services to young people ages 3-21. As public school became available for school-aged children with disabilities, the Meyer Center responded by specializing in early intervention services for children 0-6 years of age.
During its history, the Meyer Center occupied many different locations, such as old school buildings, churches and Greenville General Hospital. In April 1997, the Center relocated to its current site in Walters Plaza, which was the first to be designed specifically for the program. The expanded facility opened with an enrollment of 25 children in three classrooms. Since that time, six additional classrooms, spacious therapy areas, and administrative areas have been added. Currently, the Center serves more than 175 students annually.
