The North House, as a museum, exists to commemorate and interpret life in Greenbrier County in the early 1800s. It accomplishes this purpose by collecting, preserving, exhibiting and interpreting items, which belonged to, or were associated with, Greenbrier County, as well as other period items, which are necessary to present a complete picture to the visitor. It also accomplishes this purpose by encouraging research and publications, which are appropriate to county history. Linked to this primary goal of interpreting a historical period at a particular point in time is the secondary goal of fostering interest in, knowledge of and understanding of the history, culture, arts, architecture, industry and lifestyle of Lewisburg and Greenbrier County prior to the American Civil War, especially as represented by the material culture of the community.
