A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans to start work on a new bridge to carry KY 276/Blackhawk Road across Long Pond Branch in southernmost Caldwell County this week. The contractor is moving some equipment and materials to the site with the expectation of work starting by the end of the week. In July 2015, 61-year-old Nancy Fox of Princeton was killed when her car drove across a culvert as heavy rains washed out the roadway along KY 276/Blackhawk Road near Blue Springs Church. Neighbors reported more than 5 inches of rain along Long Pond Branch in about four hours prior to the fatal washout. At the request of area farmers, a temporary culvert was placed at the site in the fall of 2015 to allow the roadway to reopen. In the overnight hours of July 7, 2016, the temporary culvert washed out after more than 4 inches of rain hit the area in about two hours. Since then, KY 276/Blackhawk Road has remained closed at the site near the intersection with Pool Road along the Caldwell-Trigg County Line. A culvert had also washed out at this site in the mid-1960s. Due to the force of water coming down Long Pond Branch during major storm events, KYTC engineers chose to replace the Long Pond Branch Culvert with a new bridge. Jim Smith Contracting of Grand Rivers plans to start work on the new bridge this week. The $533,756 project has a target completion date of May 15. KY 276/Blackhawk Road will remain closed at milepoint 0.785 until the new bridge is completed.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans to restrict traffic to one lane on KY 402/Aurora Highway in MARSHALL County on Thursday, Feb. 23. KY 402/Aurora Highway will be restricted to one lane at milepoint 9.917 to allow a detailed inspection of the East Fork Clarks River Bridge. This is along KY 402/Aurora Highway east of the Hardin community between KY 962/Old Olive Road and Old Hardin-Olive Lane. Motorists should be alert for one lane traffic with alternating flow controlled by flaggers from about 8 :30 a.m., to about 3 p.m., Thursday. Appropriate caution is required where equipment, flaggers, and maintenance personnel are along the roadway in close proximity to traffic flow.
