Established in 1993, Boxing Works began delivering something that was lacking in the South Bay area, a facility devoted to teaching the art of western Boxing. Roughly the same time the gym was opened, the Ultimate Fighting Championship debuted on Pay Per View. Seeing the imbalance of only offering one approach to training, Boxing Works began incorporating other systems into their curriculum, including Jiu-jitsu and Muay Thai, while keeping their roots in Western Boxing.
Within 2 years of opening, Boxing Works produced their first Champion, World Boxing Organization(WBO) Jr. Welterweight Champion Sammy Fuentes. Other World Champion Boxers who have sought out Boxing Works for their training include WBA Super Middleweight Victor Cordoba and WBC Cruiserweight Champion Juan Carlos Gomez.
A very open minded policy for the time led to fighters from other combat sports/Martial Arts to gather at Boxing Works to train, teach and exchange training methods and philosophies. From the mid 90's on, it was not uncommon to have Junior Welterweight World Boxing Champion Sammy Fuentes training in the ring, while then UFC Contender and eventual UFC Champion/Hall of Famer Randy Couture would be on the mat, perfecting and developing the early forms of ”Dirty Boxing' as it would apply to MMA. Muay Thai Champion Bryan Popejoy would be trading his Muay Thai striking with RAW Team Coach Rico Chiaparelli and fighter Frank Trigg for their knowledge of Greco-Roman Wrestling. Shooto Light Heavyweight Champion Erik Paulson would be filming instructional videos, while local Jiujitsu Phenoms Chris Brennan, Chris Haueter or Chris Poznik(Yes, 3 BJJ Instructors named Chris!) would be teaching a class!
Over the years, Boxing Works has gained a reputation for being THE gym in the South Bay to seek out for specialized striking/stand up martial arts training. In addition to the Sweet Science of Western Boxing, the Muay Thai Kickboxing program at Boxing Works is second to none. Boxing Works is the only gym in the South Bay specializing in Muay Thai with Champion Instructors, Champion Students, and an ongoing connection with many of the worlds leading Muay Thai authorities and organizations, such as Ajarn Surachai Sirisute, Ajarn Sangtiennoi Sor Rungroj, The Thai BoxingAssociation of the USA, The MPL(Muay Thai Premier League) and more.
