In 1982, Jerry went to work for a custom saddlemaker where he learned saddle making from the ground up. While he was with this maker, he noticed that there were many people who were beginning to want more historically accurate saddles and gear. At that time, there were not many makers building these products. These old-time styles struck the romantic side of Jerry's nature. In April 1990, Jerry combined his interset in building historical gear with his saddle making skills and started Sawtooth Saddle Company. He did the research and design work necessary to produce saddle styles and stamping patterns from 1860-1915, similar to the designs of such shops as Meanea, Galatin, Visalia, Main and Winchester, and Miles City Saddlery. His goal was not to make carbon copies of any saddle but to build the saddle and gear styles he would have had he lived in that era. By request Jerry also used his skill and attention to detail to build modern saddle and gear styles of the same high quality that he was known for. He listened to the working cowboy and the exerienced horseperson to learn what good horse gear should be and incorporated these ideas into his products. Dan and Mark, Jerry's sons, all build saddles and gear under their own makers' stamps as well as the Sawtooth Saddle stamp. Each one personalizes the products he builds in his own way and they all stive for quality in the finished product.
