SCARC, Inc. is an organization formed in 1957 by a small group of parents who were searching for services for their sons and daughters with developmental disabilities.
Although the organization started out very small, and with volunteers at the helm, SCARC, Inc. has grown into the most comprehensive organization serving persons with developmental disabilities in Sussex County, NJ.
Initially, SCARC, Inc. developed a day care program for children and an adult program for young adults. It also developed recreation programs for leisure activities. Over the years however, SCARC recognized the need for more comprehensive services. Presently, SCARC provides 20 residential group homes and a supportive living/supervised apartments program. Additionally, It offers a day program network for adults in employment, community volunteering, and a senior program for those who choose retirement. SCARC also offers a day program for individuals with medical needs.
SCARC, Inc. is a member unit of The Arc of New Jersey and the Arc of the United States. SCARC is an autonomous registered nonprofit organization which is governed by a volunteer board of trustees. The board of trustees sets the goals and direction for the organization and employs a comprehensive staff to carry out its vision.
SCARC is a person centered organization in that it develops services for each individual person depending on one’s abilities, interests, and preferences. SCARC works with an individual’s family through the Interdisciplinary Team process and incorporates professionals and family members in the development of an Individual Habilitation Plan for each person served. Such a Plan contains goals and objectives and a vision for the life of each person. Each plan contains strategies to achieve the highest quality of life possible.
One of the major objectives of SCARC is to coordinate its efforts with other organizations which interface with the individual. Frequently, SCARC works with schools and child study teams to provide life intervention to both children and adults. In addition, SCARC coordinates with several Sussex County and state agencies to provide maximum resources to our families.
SCARC is constantly expanding its vision in order to provide appropriate services and supports to children and adults with disabilities and their families. We are continuously expanding our residential opportunities as well as employment, transition, recreation and family support services.
SCARC, Inc. obtains funds from the State of New Jersey, Division of Developmental Disabilities, as well as from such funding resources as Sussex County United Way, the SCARC Foundation, Inc., private foundations, Sussex County Department of Human Services, corporate and organizational gifts, and fund raising.
