The CAMC Health System was created in 1984 to meet the challenges of providing the highest level of health services to West Virginians, pulling together several hospitals with a history of community service dating back to 1895. Charleston Area Medical Center ("CAMC") is a nonprofit, 956-bed, regional referral and academic medical center with more than 6,000 employees. CAMC is made up of four hospitals: CAMC General Hospital, CAMC Memorial Hospital, CAMC Teays Valley Hospital and CAMC Women and Children's Hospital. CAMC is home to one of the largest heart programs in the United States; the only kidney transplant center in West Virginia; the highest level trauma center; and the only freestanding children's hospital in the state. All medical services are supported by primary care physicians throughout the region who regularly treat their patients at CAMC hospitals or refer them to CAMC for specialty consultation and treatment.
Charleston Area Medical Center Foundation - The mission of the CAMC Foundation is "Helping CAMC touch people's lives every day." Created in 1976, the foundation is the fundraising organization for the CAMC Health System. They fund advanced medical research and education, health programs and services unique to the state, as well as care for indigent patients. Donors to the foundation are committed to ensuring excellent and compassionate health care remains available to southern West Virginians.
CAMC Health Education and Research Institute - The mission of the CAMC Insitute is "Dedicated to improving health through research, education and community health development." The CAMC Institute coordinates the medical education of more than 100 third-and fourth-year medical students, and provides continuing education for hundreds of medical and health care professionals through live conferences, seminars, workshops, teleconferences and on-site programs. They also offer a broad range of community education programs.
