Christians United In Beaver County

Christians United in Beaver County (CUBC), formerly known as the Council of Churches of Beaver County, was originally developed by a fusion of two organizations – the Sabbath School Association and the Beaver County Ministerial Association. On February 7, 1955, at First Presbyterian Church of New Brighton, 170 people from 46 churches signed s charter members of the new organization. The motto was “United In Christ, We Serve.” Twelve more churches were added by the end of the year. Each church was expected to underwrite the work financially.

Music has always played an important role in our ministry. Annual choir festivals were held from 1954 to 1966, which drew 400 to 500 people. The Chorale Fest of 2012 reinstituted the practice of celebrating the common heritage of music while celebrating the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

The number of member churches increased to 66 in 1957. This year also saw the beginning of chaplain service to the youth detention center as well as the county jail. At this time, CUBC was composed of seven departments: Christian Education, Inter-church Affairs, Community Relations, Public Relations, Women’s Department, Town and Country, and Ministerial Fellowship.

By 1963, there were 83 member churches. During this time, services to campers at Raccoon State Park began. This ministry continues today with Sunday church services held from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.

The 1970’s brought a focus on education and prayer. Many countywide events, such as conferences, crusades, and special programs were held through the sponsorship of CUBC.

In the 1980’s, CUBC was the principal underwriter for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Service at Park Presbyterian Church in Beaver. Now, lunch is also provided to all who attend. This ecumenical and inter-racial event stands as a great witness to the love of God.

A new organizational process was instituted in the 90’s. The seven departments were streamlined into four commissions. The commissions consisted of Nominating and Personnel, Staff Chaplaincy, Public Ministry, and Outreach.

The new millennium has seen CUBC continuing to grow in member churches and ministries. Relationships with local and county government entities and businesses flourish. Contracts have been established with Beaver County for chaplains at the jail and Friendship Ridge. Moreover, chaplains continue to minister to youth at the Detention Center and behavioral health patients at Heritage Valley – Beaver.
