Rey Insurance

Our Dad, Francisco Rey (Frank), put family first. He opened his insurance office in Sleepy Hollow in 1978 to be close to home and so he could walk to his mother’s house, where she would prepare homemade Spanish dishes for lunch. It was also easy for the kids to walk to the office after school to visit and work.

Besides his family, our father’s second interest was making insurance understandable and accessible for everyone. As a second generation American with his first language being Spanish, he could relate to feeling frustrated and confused when one couldn’t understand what was going on. He dedicated himself to serving his clientele, which included many bilingual families in the local community.

He believed in order for people to get insurance, they first had to “get” insurance. He started the business to demystify the complicated world of insurance and help people feel more comfortable asking for and getting the right coverage for their families and their businesses. This demystifying practice as been continued by my sister, Laura and I to build upon since we took over the business in 2013.

Originally, we did not aspire to be in the family business. I know, surprising, right? Who doesn’t grow up wanting an insurance career!? Especially in the mid 80’s when we were driven by typewriters, carbon copies and a mad dash to the post office to send applications via certified mail. We didn’t have the efficiency of computers, and we certainly weren’t able to upload/download applications.

But after forging out in different directions, both my sister and me found ourselves drawn back to our community. So, here we are, celebrating 36 years of service! While the technology of business and the insurance industry has changed (for the better), our fundamental commitment to making insurance understandable and accessible to everyone has remained constant.
