Mural Arts Philadelphia began in 1984 as a component of the Philadelphia Anti-Graffiti Network, an effort created to eradicate the graffiti crisis plaguing the city. In 1996 the Anti-Graffiti Network was reorganized into the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program, with Jane Golden as the director. At the same time, Ms. Golden established a nonprofit organization, the Philadelphia Mural Arts Advocates, to raise funds and support the nationally-recognized program. Today, the Mural Arts Program is an innovative public/private partnership that encompasses both the city agency and the nonprofit, and is one of the nation’s largest public arts initiatives.
