The Sea Coast Echo is the official newspaper of Bay St. Louis and Hancock County, Mississippi, founded in January 1892. The first Echo publisher was Charles G. Moreau, who co-owned the paper with business partner one-time Pass Christian Coast Beacon manager May.
The newspaper has famously missed only two issues during its long history. One date was 1918 when the publisher's daughter succumbed to plague. The second was in 1969 in the aftermath Hurricane Camille.
History would not repeat itself in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina made Bay St. Louis and Waveland its ground zero: The newspaper was produced at a sister newspaper in Kentucky and trucked to the devastated Gulf Coast where residents were clamoring for local news.
The paper is now owned by Alabama-based Lancaster Newspapers and its publisher is James R. "Randy" Ponder, a past president of Mississippi Press Association. The editor is Geoff Belcher.
It is published semi-weekly on Wednesday and Saturday. The paper won 11 awards in the 2010 Better Newspaper Contest Editorial Division, including second place for General Excellence among large weekly newspapers.
