40 years ago today, XTC released “White Music.” Though they had issued a 3 song EP a few months prior, this was their debut LP. Marketed as a ‘new wave’ album, it climbed to #38 in the UK and featured two singles: ‘Statue of Liberty’ (banned by the BBC for one cheeky line) and ‘This is Pop?.’ As with all XTC LPs, most songs are written by Andy Partridge (then age 24), with Colin Moulding (22) contributing a few. The one cover is a radically rearranged version of Dylan’s ‘All Along the Watchtower.’ The group would go on to create 13 more studio albums before throwing in the towel.
