Yamassee- Pronounced (Yah like the A in Father -Ma-See)
Known for the historically recorded “Yamassee War of 1715” these Native Americans were called the most Fierce of Native American Tribes!

The Yamassee are farmers, fierce warriors, hunter gatherers , and descendants of the Mound Builders.
A Southeastern Tribal Nation, with the ability to call to arms, many tribes that were all apart of the Yamassee Confederacy. Called by many the “ Ancient of People” “Gentle” and “Children of the Sun” for their dark complexion!

The Yamassee has truly left a mark in Native history!

Connected historically to more than several states, such as North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, & South Carolina, the saga of the unfolding information on the congressional described “Negro” Indians unfolds.

At the peak of the Yamassee culture, there were thousands living in a variety of villages and Towns, approximated to be 35 in number but estimated to be around the neighborhood of 60 plus.
The primary area of the Yamassee Indians being that of Beaufort, South Carolina, before the county was broken down and given new county names such as Barnwell, Hampton, Allendale and other names. The Yamassee were not just localized to the Carolinian area, Yamassee ventured into Florida's history as well, having towns , forts & Villages in the St. Augustine, Jacksonville, Tallahassee, Monticello, Waukeenah, Miccosuki, Jackson county (Historically Yamassee), Deland areas and more.

Summer consisted of living in wigwams covered with palm or Palmetto leaves mostly lived there by the Warrior families of the Yamassee, protecting the banks and Coast from would be intruders or invaders.
Wigwams as customary to other tribes throughout the world , normally used the bark of trees.

In the Yamassee Central villages, was built homes called “ Wattle-and-Daub” with thatched palmetto or palms roofs. In each of the Yamassee Villages was a large community building or town house. This was used as a center of Yamassee spiritual practices and political activity.
The Chief and the core family which was often the Chiefs adviser’s lived in the largest village of the Chiefdom in either area of Upper or Lower Yamassee.

Fishing and hunting was natural to the original inhabitants of these lands called Yamassee.
Living in the river bottoms, uplands, wetlands and swamps, was nothing for the masters of these strange and unique environments!

Food and dietary intake was mostly made up of Oysters, Conch, Clams, Bear, Whitetail deer, raccoon, squirrels, turtle, Mullet (Fish) & Crabs. Yamassee later included by the way of Colonial importation , Chicken and hogs.
Vegetables natural to the environment farmed and grown was cherries, watermelon, peaches and later corn.

Yamassee Indians buried their dead in miniature mounds, the purpose of such acts shared only among the Tribal families today!
