REAL ID Update: Minnesotans can continue using their driver’s licenses for federal purposes such as boarding airplanes and accessing federal facilities now until Oct. 10, 2018, under an extension granted by the U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security (DHS). DHS granted the formal extension on Oct. 18. This gives Minnesota time to meet statutory deadlines and ensure Minnesotans have REAL ID compliant cards. The Department of Public Safety Driver and Vehicle Services division (DVS) is working to meet the October 2018 deadline. More information on how to obtain a REAL ID compliant driver’s license will be available in the coming months. More information can be found here: https://www.dhs.gov/real-id
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced on December 20, 2013 a phased enforcement plan for the REAL ID Act (the Act), as passed by Congress, that will implement the Act in a measured, fair, and responsible way.
