The federal Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) program is the country's most extensive affordable housing program. It was created in 1986 and supports 90 percent of all new affordable housing projects today. This year, AHFC awarded $3.3 million in LIHTC funding to five properties supporting the development and/or preservation of 158 units. In addition to making more affordable housing available LIHTC contributes to the local economy on a large scale through the hiring of local labor for these housing projects.
