National Commander Denise Rohan issued the following statement after the Department of Veterans Affairs sent a bill proposal to Congress that would overhaul how veterans receive health care in the private sector and do away with the widely criticized "30-day/40-mile' rule: "The American Legion applauds the Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs for his efforts to improve healthcare for veterans by streamlining out-of-system community treatment options while strengthening care at VA facilities nationwide. The Choice program, implemented in the wake of the 2014 wait-time scandal, was never intended to be a permanent program. For many months, The American Legion has advised the VA on ways to provide better, more timely care to veterans based on the feedback of our 2M members around the world. We look forward to working with Dr. Shulkin and his leadership team to make the VA more efficient, transparent, and effective in delivering improved healthcare options and outcomes to our nation’s veterans.”

An initiative of American Legion National Commander Denise H. Rohan is for posts, districts and departments to reconnect with deploying or returning military personnel and to report those efforts on a form added to the 2018 National Membership Awards Points Manual. The Department of Michigan is successfully achieving this initiative as its reconnect program has become the “go-to” resource when a state veteran, servicemember and their family is facing financial hardship, needing assistance with reintegration, or looking for other support services.
The department’s Reconnect Committee has created thriving programs to meet the financial and reintegration needs of veterans, servicemembers and their families.
