We take great pride in the fact that we are SDT's founding chapter and constantly strive to maintain the morals and ideals upon which our founding sisters established the Alpha Chapter. The following quote, from Sigma Delta Tau's national organization, best describes our founding story:
“On March 25, 1917, seven young women who exemplified self-confidence and the willingness to take a chance, founded a new sorority at Cornell University. Most of the seven had experienced the subtle, but very real, discrimination practiced against religious minorities by many Greek organizations at the time. In response to the closed doors, and as a way to meet their own social and housing needs, these young women established a sorority which would respect the individuality of its members. The personal growth and social development of each individual was the basis upon which the new organization would be built.” -Sigma Delta Tau Sorority, Inc.
Today, the Alpha Chapter of Sigma Delta Tau is one of the most vibrant and involved groups of women on Cornell’s campus. We have sisters hailing from Alaska to Paris and everywhere in between, and pride ourselves on how cohesive yet diverse our chapter is. Among our sisters are a class president, a Cornell Daily Sun editor, a club sports captain, members of national business fraternities, a cappella singers, hip hop dancers, and several club presidents. We strongly value a balance between social engagement, philanthropic involvement, and academic excellence, and have received the top sorority GPA across the entire Cornell Panhellenic community for many consecutive semesters.
