The True Light Family Resource Center (TLFRC) was founded in April 2006, to serve the needs of at-risk individuals and families. True Light Church had, since its inception, in October 1998, worked in community support offering services such as clothes closet, nutrition, food preparation classes and a food pantry. These services were always provided in collaboration with churches and social service agencies.
When the church relocated to 31st Street, the Resource Center was formally organized as a separate 501 (C) (3). Ron Benefel, the President of Nazarene Theological Seminary, was visiting with a former student, Betty Avarez Ham, President of City Impact in Oxnard, California. Betty asked to see our location and was impressed that we were located in an area with homelessness and great need. She also saw that we were already meeting some community needs. Betty and I worked together to launch the True Light Family Resource Center.
From the time the doors first opened True Light FRC has served thousands of individuals and families. Many aremen and women, living on the streets or in shelters. Some are the working poor and living below the poverty level. Some are mentally ill and or addicted and find it difficult to make substantial choices and decisions without assistance. Among the thousands served are women and children attempting to transition to a life of self reliance.
