Mission Statement:

The Overton County Sheriff’s Department is committed to protect life, liberty, and property of all people; to maintain order, enforce the laws, & civil process. The Overton County Sheriff’s Department is responsible for the professional care and custody of those confined in our jail, the security of our courts, the prompt investigation of crime when it occurs, and to vigorously seek the prosecution of offenders. It is our mission to improve and maintain the quality of life and ensure that our county is a safe place to live, work, and visit.

Basic History:

The first Sheriff of Overton County was John B. Cross from 1807 to 1810. The original Overton County jail was erected in Monroe about the year of 1809. After it was decided to move the county seat from Monroe to Livingston in 1834, a new jail was built on the Northeast corner of the Public Square. The current jail was built at John T. Poindexter Drive in June of 2002.

Department Information:

Melton was elected as Sheriff in September of 2006, then re-elected in August of 2010. We currently run the department with 57 employees, including 4 Investigators who work from our Investigation Division Substation since October 2010. Since Sheriff Melton took office in 2006, he has made many changes and add-ons to different departments. In early 2009 the Critical Response Unit was formed with a 10 person team, in 2007 a new dog was added to the K-9 Unit, we currently have 8 Reserve Deputy Positions, and the Eddie Eagle Gun Safety Mascot and classroom tools were implemented into our county schools in 2010.
