The Weekend Theater is a volunteer-driven, non-profit, theater group producing socially significant works for the Central Arkansas community since 1993. For the past decade, TWT has produced anywhere from 10-15 black-box dramas and musicals each season, all operating under the organization’s credo in which its cast, crew, staff and board agree to “be a true community of people dedicated to the teaching, learning and practice of kindness, respect and honor.” The Credo, which is posted in the theater lobby and read aloud at each audition, goes on to affirm that all participants will “attempt to accomplish this goal by personally, interpersonally, and educationally reducing prejudice, cruelty and indifference.” To this end, TWT almost exclusively chooses works dealing directly with issues of social injustice, with themes in which people learn through such things as suffering, cruelty, and insensitivity, serving to remind all those involved -- on stage and in the audience – how far we’ve come and how far we still have to go.
Our intimate theater is located in a wonderful, comfortably remodeled two-story building at the corner of 7th and Chester streets in Little Rock. For theater-lovers, the setting is decidedly New York in character — apartments upstairs, theater downstairs, pizza joint/microbrewery across one street, and the local fire station across the other! And now, the theater is totally smoke-free.
