Earth Conservation Corps is a nonprofit, environmental action program powered by unemployed community youth in a transformative year of Anacostia River restoration.
We are neighborhood youth with few resources but have doggedly fought to reclaim the river that is our back yard. When we the first corps started 2 years ago the Anacostia was one of the most polluted in america and they decided to start cleaning it up. By taking action we galvanized a massive reclamation effort and the river is recovering. Our neighborhoods have not seen the same level of investment and remain some of the most violent in america. Today almost half our volunteer time is spent on watershed restoration efforts to connect those mean streets to the river and the larger community. Our non profit is complety staffed by former youth volunteers. Others have gone on to college, environmental and science careers. Early on we saw that we would need help so we have incubated of lured in 9 other complimentary programs and host them at the environmental action center we created from an abandoned pumphouse collapsing into the Anaocstia.
