Atlantic Carpet Cleaning OBX shared Ocracoke Current's post.
For those who want to reach out and help Ocracoke, here's another opportunity: PACK A BACKPACK Dear friends, Hello! My name is Jeanie Owens and I am the proud 5th grade teacher at Ocracoke School. In the wee hours of the morning, I was working on my school supply list for our new fifth graders. The more I brainstormed, the more concerned I became. I started thinking to myself, “In light of our emergency situation, how are my parents going to afford this?” Most of our families work in the tourism industry, primarily between the months of April and November. I know some of my parents hold two, even three jobs in order to meet their family’s financial needs throughout the year. Without our wonderful tourists, our businesses are closed and our families are losing their income…and school starts in 3 ½ weeks! Even if full power is restored (and ALL fingers and toes are crossed here) and tourists return, getting school supplies would mean a day-trip off the island, which is another day without pay for many. So many of you have asked, “How can we help?” Here’s where I see a need. Let’s help our children and families of Ocracoke School by supplying them with school items. Below are the desired items from ALL of our grade-level supply lists. Ocracoke is a small, PreK-12 school that is part of Hyde County. Last year, we had a record population of 187 students! This year, we’re on track for similar numbers. Depending upon the amount of donations we receive, I would like to set up a time for students to “shop” free of charge to pack their backpack. After all, part of the fun of starting your school year is picking out your own supplies! And thanks to you, this will be stress-free for our families! A special thanks to our wonderful new Principal, Ms. Leslie Cole, and our fantastic Superintendent, Dr. Latimore, for allowing me to put this idea out there! Please consider sending us anything from the list…even just one item will be useful. You can mail them to 120 Schoolhouse Road, PO Box 189 Ocracoke, North Carolina 27960. If you would like to arrange a statewide pick-up, please message me. It truly does take a village. And right now the children and families of the village of Ocracoke need your help! Thanks for giving a helping hand and packing our backpacks! Warmest regards, Ms. Jeanie Requested items: Backpacks Lunch boxes Markers (broad and thin) Colored pencils Crayons Lined note cards (3x5) Plastic folders Regular folders Pencil pouches 8 tab pocket dividers #2 pencils (everyone loves Ticonderoga) Mechanical pencils Canvas zipper bag with holes Pens Highlighters Tissues (LOTS of them) Clorox wipes (LOTS of them) Blankets, small pillows (for preschool and kindergarten) Small children’s toothbrush and children’s toothpaste Plastic forks and spoons Paper towels Napkins Expo markers 1 inch 3-ring binders (many have asked for this) 2 inch 3-ring binders (many have asked for this) 3 inch 3-ring binders Dividers Loose leaf paper Headphones/earbuds Glue sticks Band-Aids All size Ziploc bags Big erasers Blue two pocket folders Green two pocket folders College ruled loose-leaf paper Composition books (non-spiral)- Lots of teachers use these Graphing calculators (Texas Instruments TI-84) Sketchbook White erasers Fine point sharpie pens Sharpies Graph paper Sticky tabs Sticky notes Folders without prongs Scissors (for lower and upper elementary) Individual pencil sharpeners 70 page spiral notebooks with holes Metric ruler Construction paper Handheld dispensers with transparent tape Hand sanitizer Other items you may consider: New children’s tennis shoes Reusable water bottles Flash drive New clothes
