Deputy Superintendent Named Icon of Education Kenny Southwick, deputy superintendent of the Shawnee Mission School District, is one of Ingram’s magazine’s 2017 Icons of Education. The honor recognizes his 41 years as an educator, which in addition to his time in Shawnee Mission, includes his service and leadership in Belton, Missouri, where he served as superintendent for 12 years. “This year’s Icons have embraced the charge of passing the torch of knowledge on to succeeding generations,” Ingram’s wrote. “Truth be told, legions of other education professionals have done the same. But this year’s honorees stand out for their impact as well as their commitment.” The article recognizes Southwick for his years of service and highlights his strategic vision and skill in overseeing initiatives, including bond issues. The magazine also recognized his focus on building relationships, particularly with students. “There never was a program that saved a child; it was a person who did that. We have responsibilities as people to reach out and help others,” Southwick told Ingram’s. In addition to the individuals honored in 2017, Southwick joins an esteemed group of educators to have been honored by the magazine, including Shawnee Mission School District Superintendent Jim Hinson, who was named an Icon of Education in 2012.
