Ocon Sensible Pest Solutions

OCON Termite & Pest Control, Inc. was established in 1979 by Jack and Barbara O’Connell. By that time, Jack had already spent 20 years in our industry with another company. With their focus on personalized customer service and quick response, Jack and Barbara quickly built OCON into Western Connecticut’s premier Pest Management firm.

Right from the beginning, Barbara’s oldest son, Steve Temple, was involved in the company. He learned the business hands-on between semesters at college and joined the firm full-time in December of 1984. When Jack and Barbara retired in the Spring of 1997, Steve took the reins as OCON President. Even with the remarkable growth OCON has experienced, we continue to provide the same high-quality, timely service that got us where we are.

Your CT house is a fantastic place to live, and no one could agree more than insects and rodents. When these pests make their way into your home, they will take advantage of your space in whatever ways they can. Once these pests get a foothold into your home, they? Property damage can skyrocket, and in some cases, the entire house may be ruined. And as long as the home has adequate food, moisture, and temperature, a home is vulnerable to an infestation.

Fairfield, Waterbury, New Haven, Stamford, or Trumbull Cockroach Infestations

Cockroaches bring all kinds of problems into your home. Social implications aside, they host a variety of pathogenic bacteria and fungi, such as Salmonella, that are then passed on to humans through contaminations of foods and surfaces. They can survive on nearly any food source, including food crumbs, glue, hair, grease, or even other dead cockroaches. A single pair of cockroaches, according to Science World, have been known to product as many as 500 young in a single year! And once they're established, that have 350 million years of adaptation and evolution keeping the Naugatuck, Milford, Orange, Ridgefield, Trumbull, Naugatuck, Torrington, Milford, Norwalk, or Torrington cockroach infestation alive and well in your home.

Along with the viruses and bacteria they bring, Westport, Shelton, Milford, Torrington, Trumbull, Torrington, Shelton, Stratford, Naugatuck, or Naugatuck cockroach infestations also contribute to the allergens in the home. Cockroach feces, salvia, eggs, outer covering, and the bodies themselves are all allergenic to humans and especially to those with asthma or respiratory conditions, according to Agricultural Research Magazine. Studies have shown that the allergens can linger for long after the cockroaches have been eliminated and removed, causing them to leave behind heath-compromising allergens that can remain in the area for years. The eggs, feces, saliva, and outer coverings of cockroaches all contain a great deal of allergenic material, according to Agricultural Research Magazine, and these allergens are especially significant to people with asthma and respiratory conditions. Good Housekeeping recommends products such as boric acid powder, which can stick to a cockroach's delicate leg hairs to be ingested during grooming, as a proven and effective way of removing this menace.

Subterranean Termites cause Billions in damage to structures each year. More than fires, floods and storms combined!

Subterranean termites live in highly-structured, social colonies in the soil. The alates, or “swarmers” develop each year within the termite colony and are often seen in large numbers when they swarm in the Spring. A termite swarm means there is a mature termite colony nearby. The sole function of this swarm is reproduction. The alates pair off, shed their wings and return to the soil to start new colonies. This is one way termites spread in a region or neighborhood.

The “workers” (above) perform all the work of the colony. They build and maintain pathways or mud tunnels to and from food sources. They tend to the queen and her young. And, they consume the structural component of wood called “cellulose” and supply this food to the rest of the colony. In Nature this is beneficial. It allows the nutrients from fallen trees, etc. to be recycled back into the soil. But when termites find a home or other structure, extensive damage may result over time.

Like Termites, Carpenter Ants are social insects. Colonies consist of a Queen and various worker castes or sizes each of which performs a function for the colony. Unlike Termites however, Carpenter Ants do not consume wood. Damage from Carpenter Ants results when a colony excavates galleries in wood for nesting. Most frequently this is done in areas of high moisture where the wood may already be compromised by rot decay. Leaky roofs (especially flat roofs) and around windows and doors where moisture has entered are prime Carpenter Ant spots.

The largest or "Major" workers do most of the colony's food foraging. These are the "big black ants" we may see in the kitchen or trailing around the outside of the house.
