Currently in its 72nd season, the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra presents 12 subscription concert and a free, outdoor community patriotic concert. One of the Symphony’s long-standing traditions is its annual Composer’s Award. Established in 1959, this honor is the oldest award of its kind in the nation and is presented to a living American composer who is making a particularly significant contribution in the field of symphonic music. Past recipients include Leroy Anderson, Morton Gould, Benjamin Lees, Jennifer Higdon, and Peter Boyer.
Part of the Symphony’s mission statement is also fulfilled through its nationally recognized Sound Discovery Community Engagement Programs whose purpose is to engage, build, and strengthen our community through imaginative and unique musical experiences. Sound Discovery’s comprehensive and inclusive approach to enriching and strengthening the local community has enabled the organization to impact nearly 10,000 citizens annually in the private, public and home-school sectors of education. These music enrichment programs offer a broad array of opportunities for students in third grade through college and adult, for the serious instrumental student as well as the classical music lover and novice with a special focus on the disadvantaged and underserved populations primarily in downtown Lancaster.
