I'm thinking the striking is more of a blend with the spiral of the attack. What do you think?
O'Sensei said something to the effect that aikido is largely entering and striking -- irimi/atemi. Here's a brief video (about 1:40) showing all of O'Sensei's atemis in his 1935 movie "Budo."

Vermont Aikido shared Aikido Advice for Women...and a Few Men's post.
Aikido is not entirely transmitted through what is 'seen' or what someone 'tells' you. It has to be 'felt'. Physical connection encompasses not only our own body as Nage, but also the body of Uke (as an extension of ourselves). It is not a forcing, pushing, or pulling. It is more about incorporating Uke. Our Uke must be 'connected with', 'absorbed', or 'harnessed'. This is the difference between doing something to someone as opposed to doing something with someone. Know, however, that Uke is not just passively going along. Balance taken, he should feel compelled as if he had no choice. This is why techniques can feel incredibly strong yet noninsistent. When done correctly, this 'feels' perplexing to Uke. Leaving our attacker confused can be intriguing. Uke tries to figure out what just happened and reinforces a curiosity that can keep one on this remarkable path... 'Feel' the technique.
