Press Release From the Columbia Police Department: On March 6, 2017 at approximately 12:55 p.m., the City of Columbia's Mayor Curtis Hardwick was arrested as a result of a grand jury indictment charging him with Theft by Unlawful Taking of Disposition (more than $10,000 but less than $1,000,000) and Official Misconduct (first degree). The indictment follows an investigation into a recent City of Columbia audit which revealed that Mayor Hardwick had unlawfully given the directive to overbill City of Columbia natural gas customers a total of $107,749.43 in violation of a Columbia city ordinance. It is our hope that the Columbia City Council will swiftly take all steps necessary to ensure City of Columbia natural gas customers as well as all our citizens are treated fairly and protected from any fraud, waste and abuse.

About 3 p.m. on Thursday, school officials received word that graffiti of a threatening nature had been discovered in a girls' restroom at Adair County High School. The message contained a satanic reference and indicated that people would die the next day. Officials contacted School Resource Officer Kevin Atwood, who began an investigation assisted by Robbie Harmon, the school district's Director of Pupil Personnel. A 14-year-old female student was arrested about 9:30 p.m. that night after examining school video and other evidence. She has allegedly been charged with terroristic threatening (second degree), criminal mischief (third degree) and disorderly conduct (first degree). Officers determined that there was no reason to suspect that she actually attempted to carry out a threat against the students or school personnel, so classes were not canceled at the high school.
