Welcome Back! Here's to another great year in Lower Merion School District!

The 5th Annual Cal's Cupcake Challenge to benefit The Calliope Joy Foundation (TCJF) and the #Leukodystrophy Center of Excellence at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) is set to take place on Saturday, September 16 from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at Cynwyd Elementary School. The day will feature kid bakers (ages 5-15) competing for the title of Cupcake Champion, moon bounces, face painting, arts & crafts, raffles, food and 5,000 cupcakes from the region's best bakeries! Since the first Challenge in 2014, TCJF has raised $350,000 for children with Leukodystrophy and through these efforts, CHOP was able to establish the nation's first Leukodystrophy Center of Excellence. The clinic has grown dramatically as doctors were only treating four patients a month in 2015. Now the Center sees 44 patients a month with families traveling from all over the nation to see the program's 35 specialists. Learn more @

Nine Penn Wynne Elementary School students were recently selected as recipients of the 2017 Young #Heroes Award sponsored by the National Liberty Museum and TD Bank for their service project, "Hats for Haiti." The Young Heroes Award recognizes young people who have taken action to make positive social change in their schools and communities. Each year, this program looks for students who have "championed liberty by engaging in civic activities; promoted respectful solutions to conflict; advocated for diversity and inclusive environments for everyone; and sought out leadership roles in their community." #ArtsEd Nearly two and a half decades after Peter Gard graduated from Lower Merion High School, the Philadelphia-based #artist returned to his alma mater to install his most recent project – the "Lockersphere" – in the atrium outside of the Kobe Bryant Gymnasium. The giant 700-lb. sphere was created entirely from locker doors salvaged from the old LMHS building that was demolished several years ago. Before the walls came down, Gard removed hundreds of doors with a vision to create a dynamic piece of artwork for the new space that would pay homage to the school's past. Full story @

Welsh Valley Middle School student Anna Welsh has been named one of 26 finalists in the second annual Stellar Startups Competition – a program sponsored by the Philadelphia Media Network celebrating and recognizing the #startup community in and around #Philadelphia. Welsh, the youngest of all finalists in this year's competition, combined her passion for sewing, learning and protecting the environment to create her company – Little Bags, Big Impact – that produces and sells handcrafted clutch bags from resourced vintage materials. Welsh donates 15% of all proceeds to Tree House Books, an organization dedicated to improving child literacy and education in the North Philadelphia area. Great work, Anna! Story @
