The 54th Branch of the Ukrainian American Youth Association, better known as CYM – Khersones in Stamford, CT was established in March, 2011, by a parents committee organized from the Ukrainian community of the Stamford area. This community consists of mainly newcomers/immigrants from Ukraine in recent years. These families wanted to create a CYM in Stamford to maintain their children’s use of the Ukrainian language, traditions and customs, teach children about the glorious and sometimes tragic past of Ukraine. Mainly, it was to create an environment where their children and themselves could interact and create friendships with other Ukrainian’s that share a common bond and vision.
Our community, like other communities in the Ukrainian and abroad, is centered around our church, Cathedral of St. Volodymyr the Great. In his honor and in honor of his baptism which has changed the the nature of the Ukrainian people, and our evolution to a modern nation, we adopted the name of the city of his baptism, Khersones.
