In 1983, Atlanta recorded the second largest percentage of below-poverty-level residents of any city in the country ( ). Responding to several decades of an unmet critical housing need, a group of concerned Atlanta citizens opened an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity. The organization’s simple and broadly appealing mission – to provide the opportunity of homeownership to working families in need – quickly garnered support. Since 1983, Atlanta Habitat has built and renovated more than 1,300 homes primarily in the City of Atlanta and Fulton County.
More than 50 individuals currently staff Atlanta Habitat. We also engage the efforts of approximately 13,000 volunteers annually to raise funds, build homes, qualify homeowner applicants, provide administrative support, and much more.
Atlanta Habitat for Humanity also operates the ReStore, an alternate source for affordable home improvement items, appliances, and furnishings for homeowners, neighbors, and local families. Since December 2001, the Atlanta Habitat ReStore has diverted thousands of tons of materials from landfills by offering it to others for purchase and reuse.
