In 1982 the South Dakota Legislature established the South Dakota National Guard Museum under the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. The Museum is currently located in the old truck and gun shed build by the South Dakota National Guard and Works Project Administration in 1941. The South Dakota museum is one of only 20 authorized National Guard museums in the nation. The museum is a non-profit organization which also receives a small amount of state funding. The museum is staffed by a curator and local volunteers knowledgeable about all displays.
