Raising Roots is a service learning project that looks to improve the lives of young people and community members in the Eureka School District. The program will provide raised gardens to approximately 100 households in the community. Beds will be designed, constructed, installed and filled with vegetable plants by students at no cost to the household. Accompanying the bed will be a short teaching lesson by students to educate the family on how to tend for the garden. Gardening tools will also be provided to the family.

Eureka High School and Middle School students will also grow produce on campus in 20-25 raised beds. These will serve as classrooms that will be used by many students, as well as to provide produce for the community.

“State Farm supports service-learning because it integrates service to the community into classroom curriculum using a hands-on approach to mastering subject material while fostering civic responsibility,” said Cooper Kennard, Youth Advisory Board Coordinator. “The State Farm Youth Advisory Board is a prime example of State Farm’s commitment to education, our community and our youth.”

The State Farm Youth Advisory Board has granted over $32 million in grant money since its inception in 2006, empowering youth to implement service-learning in 520 communities.

Additionally, applications are available for interested youth aged 17-20 to become Youth Advisory Board members. More information can be found at
