The first Amboy paper was known as The Amboy Journal and was started by Judge Alonzo Kinyon in 1854 at the time of the founding of the city of Amboy. It was a 5-column, 4 page paper. On April 3, 1856, the name of the paper was changed to The Amboy Times and became a 6-column, 4 page paper. Since then, the paper changed hands several times and before long there were two papers circulating in Amboy; The Amboy Journal, started in 1870, and The Amboy News, which was reported to have started in 1878. The merger of these two papers resulted in the first issue of The Amboy News on October 10, 1913.
