Brief History of Company
Founding and Early Years 1949-1959:
The Howard T. Moriarty Co.(HTM) was founded in 1949 when Howard broke away from his fathers company, Moriarty Machinery. Moriarty Machinery was founded in 1908 by Thomas Moriarty and carried hoists, parts, supplies, and was a Chicago Pneumatic dealer who carried their line of air compressors. Howard and Thomas didn't see eye to eye on some points and caused him to open the new store. He originally opened it within 1 block of Moriarty Machinery and finally moved to 143 Broadway in 1955. Moriarty Machinery was located at 209-211 Williams across the street from what is currently San Marcos Taqueria and is within 2 blocks of the current location. HTM became the larger of the two companies within a couple of years and carried items such as Michigan and American Cranes, which where mostly boom type cranes, Michigan front end loaders, parts and supplies. HTM acquired the dealership for LeRoi air compressors in 1949 and continued that partnership till 1986. In 1959 Thomas Moriarty passed away and running of Moriarty Machinery was assumed by his managers.
Acquisition of Lines and Growth 1960-1998:
With the building of the expressways it was a prosperous time in the late 50's and early-mid 60's. HTM acquired Wacker-Neuson brand equipment around 1960 which at that time mostly consisted of small compaction equipment. Clemco was acquired in 1962 and still represent their line of sandblasting equipment and supplies. Gorman-Rupp's Construction line of pumps were acquired in 1963 and has become one of our top lines with the dealership covering 19 counties in NW Ohio and SE Michigan. Stihl Power Equipment was acquired around 1965 and still represent their lawn care, forestry, and industrial products offering their full line. LeRoi air compressors were replaced with Doosan/Ingersoll-Rand compressors in 1986 and has been an industry leader for the 25 years that we have represented them and cover 15 counties in NW Ohio. Howard Moriarty passed away in 1977 at the age of 77 and Jim Moriarty assumed control of the corporation becoming the president. In 1982 Moriarty Machinery was bought by Jim Moriarty and took over operations. One of the reasons for that was confusion in the Toledo market with both companies having the same last name and what each respective company carried. The downturn of the early-mid 80's led to the upswing of the mid 90's and talk turned to expansion of the supply market.
Renovations and Renewal 1999-Present:
In 1999 HTM undertook a $150,000 renovation to the main building at 143 Broadway. The service shop was moved to the other side of the equipment yard and the old shop was converted into a 'grocery store' for Contractors, Industrial, and Home Owners with 6 aisles of supplies. The walls were sandblasted and painted and the floor was given a new coat of epoxy. The counter was redone also and now is completely open and can wait on customers from 3 sides. In 2005 Jim Moriarty Jr. was named President and Patrick Moriarty was named Vice-President while Jim Moriarty Sr. took on the role of Chairman of the Board. In the meantime there was some lean years during the early-mid 2000's but HTM came through that leaner and with a new outlook, but still sticking to the principles that have made us an industry leader in small-midsize construction equipment: Top Level Customer Service, Knowledgeable Employees, and Premium and Reliable Brands like
Doosan/Ingersoll-Rand, Gorman-Rupp, Wacker-Neuson, Stihl, Honda, and Tsurumi.
Just recently we have made additions to our rental fleet in the form of 2-
Gorman-Rupp 4" Diesel Trash Pumps, 6- Wacker-Neuson Light Towers, and 4-2011 Ingersoll-Rand/Doosan 185cfm Platinum line air compressors. We are seeing promising signs of an improving economy and hope that you can experience working with us in the future.
