United Cerebral Palsy of North Jersey

5
Founded in 1953, we deliver life-affirming services to infants, children, adults and their families throughout northern New Jersey. Not limited to serving consumers with cerebral palsy, we provide specialized programs to meet a wide range of educational, therapeutic and social needs of people with various disabilities. We are an independent, nonprofit organization. Our programs and services include:

• Infant/Toddler Services and Children Under Age 3: Our Early Intervention Program serves infants and toddlers from birth to three years of age in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic and Union counties who have shown delays in their development. By working in a child’s “natural environment,” such as the home or day care center, therapists and educators address each infant’s disability while providing training and support for the caregiver.

• Education: At Horizon School and Horizon High School, both in Livingston, we offer comprehensive educational and therapeutic programs supported by specialized medical services for students ages 3-21 with multiple disabilities. The schools offer an integrated approach to education stressing functional learning. In addition to the Horizon Schools, our Community Therapy Services (CTS) provides physical and occupational therapy, speech and language evaluations, and assistive technology services to children in their neighborhood public schools. The goal of these services is to allow children with disabilities to remain in their local school with supportive therapy and other services.

• Adult Day Programs: Three Adult Training Centers, in Irvington, East Orange and Wayne, serve individuals age 21 and over with developmental disabilities. The programs provide physical, occupational and speech therapy, sensory stimulation, educational, vocational, social, recreational, and community integration opportunities five days per week. Activities focus on life skills, self-care, communication, mobility, personal awareness, arts, crafts and music, while providing health, medical and physical and behavioral supports.

• Residential Services: Group Homes in West Orange, Orange and Maplewood provide around-the-clock guidance, supervision and support to adults with developmental disabilities so that they can enjoy the benefits of life in a secure and homelike setting. A 24-unit apartment building in Newark, Essex Properties, offers independent living facilities to low-income adults with disabilities who can live on their own but who need some social service supports.

• Respite: After School/After Work Programs in both East Orange and Livingston offer weekday afternoon respite to families while creating opportunities for education, recreation and socialization for children and adults with disabilities.

• Tailored Programs: From time to time we offer programs paid for by individuals or their families in response to New Jersey’s Real Life Choices program or other special needs or requests.
