St. James' Parish was founded in April 1892 as a mission of the Diocese of California by the Very Rev’d John Abbott Emery. It was built, in part, with assistance of the newly founded United Thank Offering birthed by Julia Emery.
Throughout our 128 years, we have been known in the community as a place where Christ is central to the worship and life of the individuals who join with us, but also as a place of social justice.
St. James' cared for the Asian population during the anti Asian campaign, women's rights, the Civil Rights era (fighting for equal justice for Black Americans as early as the 1920s) and our rector Fr. Steensland went to Selma, Alabama to work and walk with Dr. Martin Luther King,
Our worship life ranges from the ancient and honourable tradition of the Elizabethan era to the innovative with alternative rites and forms all conforming to the rubrics of The Episcopal Church's canons as set forth in the Book of Common Prayer, 1979.
Our music life spans the entire spectrum of music from Gregorian Chant to the 21st century Taize and hymns composed in 2010. We include music of many traditions including Spanish, African, and Southern Gospel.
St James' Parish is an affirming congregation of the Episcopal Church. Our members come from all walks of life and bring diversity to our unity in Christ.
