In 1975, local Mennonite Churches had a vision for making the world better for senior citizens on fixed incomes by repairing homes of elderly people no longer able to do so themselves. Volunteers from these congregations formed the Mennonite Voluntary Service Unit and began operating from a small garage in the midtown area of Wichita. In response, the City of Wichita boosted the group's efforts by providing a new van and construction tools.
In March of 1977, the MVSU was incorporated into a 501(c)3 community-based, non-profit organization. In addition, the name of the organization was changed to Mennonite Housing Rehabilitation Services, Inc. Since that time, Mennonite Housing has been guided by a Board of Directors.
