Joint Manipulation: There are several types of joint manipulation. All have psychological, mechanical and complex neurophysiological effects. These “neurophysiological effects” relieve pain through the release of endorphins and the activation of articular (joint) mechanoreceptors, cutaneous (skin) receptors and muscular receptors. Kinesiotape: Kinesiotape — sometimes called “KTape” — is remarkably effective at relieving pain. It can also be used to facilitate weakened muscles, inhibit muscle spasms, and improve lymphatic drainage (to reduce bruising and swelling). Kinesiotape is extremely comfortable. It can be worn for days at a time and does not restrict normal motion like most other tapes do. Check this link for a summary of research concerning the benefits of kinesiotape: Physical Activity: On February 14, 2017 the American College of Physicians issued updated treatment guidelines for acute, subacute and chronic low back pain. Non-drug therapies — including exercise — are now recommended first-line treatments. There are all kinds of exercise, of course, from strength training and aerobics, to postural exercises, to programs focused on motor control. Seek advice from your health care professional to see which types of exercise would be most useful to reduce your pain. #BechtelPhysicalTherapy #ManualTherapy #PhysicalTherapyFirst #LosAngeles #PainSucks #JointManipulation #KinesioTape #Ktape #PhysicalActivity #Exercise #TherapeuticExercise Thanks to the participating members of the BPT team! @kristinedpt @wegottheloox @runner_bevy24 @micahenoch

Low-Level (Class 3B) Laser Therapy (top left picture): Class 3 laser energy only penetrates 1 to 2 millimeters into the body, while Class 4 lasers penetrate much more deeply. Delivering energy at wavelengths from 600 - 950 nanometers (nm), with half a watt of power or less, Class 3 Lasers can speed wound healing and relieve inflammation, pain and edema (bruising). The biochemical mechanisms of laser light treatment are not completely understood. We know from experience, however, that it works. For more information, check out the excellent paper entitled “Mechanisms of Low Level Light Therapy” by Professor Michael Hamblin of Harvard Medical School ( Class 4 Laser Therapy (top right picture): Class 4 lasers deliver light at wavelengths between 800 and 980 nanometers with 0.5 to 60 watts of power. Class 4 lasers can vastly improve microcirculation and mitochondrial function (the power generators in all living cells). This therapy can reduce pain and inflammation and speed healing of muscles and ligaments. Class 4 lasers penetrate deeply and are useful at treating acute and chronic pain throughout the body (including hips, shoulders and the spine). Bechtel Physical Therapy is one of the very few PT clinics in California using state of the art Class 4 lasers. #BechtelPhysicalTherapy #ManualTherapy #PhysicalTherapyFirst #LosAngeles #PainSucks #Class3Laser #Class4Laser #PhysicalTherapyLasers

Deaths from prescription opioids have quadrupled since 1999. Many opiod addictions begin with a trip to the doctor’s office to treat an injury, manage chronic pain or deal with post-op discomfort. Serious side effects from the overuse of steroidal and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories are also common. You have pain. We hear you! While treating the root cause of your problem, we can also use many science backed, non-drug options to provide pain relief. So, don’t rush to the pharmacy. TRY PHYSICAL THERAPY FIRST. (The next two posts detail some of the non-drug Physical Therapy treatments available to reduce pain.) #BechtelPhysicalTherapy #ManualTherapy #PhysicalTherapyFirst #LosAngeles #PainSucks

Musculoskeletal pain is a worldwide misery. Don't worry, though, we're on it. When you hurt, we help. Some of our favorite treatments use Graston instruments and techniques. Graston Technique is instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization combined with specific exercises, joint mobilization and neuromuscular reeducation. Graston instruments come in an assortment of shapes and sizes and are made of high grade surgical stainless steel. These instruments act like a stethoscope for Therapists' hands, massively amplifying soft tissue changes throughout the body. They are ideal for helping clinicians diagnose the precise location, direction and nature of tissue texture abnormalities and restrictions in muscles, tendons and fascia. They also allow pinpoint treatment of many conditions more precisely than possible with hands alone. Graston Technique is highly effective at treating many common ailments including rotator cuff tendonitis/tendonosis, painful low back conditions, tennis elbow, golfer's elbow, Achilles tendonitis, iliotibial band tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, and painful cervical (neck) conditions. You can't beat musculoskeletal pain with a stick, but we can beat it with stainless steel! #BechtelPhysicalTherapy #ManualTherapy #GrastonTechnique #SoftTissueMobilization #LosAngeles #PainSucks
