Auto Care has been delivering convenient, affordable car repair service to the local community since 1988.

Immersion in water can wreak havoc with a car, especially the engine, transmission, electrical system, and interior. If your car has been immersed in water: >>Do not attempt to start the car!<< It's tempting to turn the key and see if the car still works, but if there is water in the engine, attempting to start it could damage it beyond repair. Residual water can be sucked into the engine, into the combustion chamber. As water will not combust, it can easily lead to damage requiring the replacement of the engine… or totaling of the vehicle depending upon cost of repair/replacement at the discretion of your insurance company. After high water, vehicles fluids MUST be FLUSHED and replaced! >>How deep the car was submerged?<< Mud and debris usually leave a waterline on the car, inside as well as out. Many vehicles have computers under the seats. Electrical problems due to water penetration and subsequent corrosion sometimes do not present themselves for MONTHS after an insurance claim has already been closed. For this reason, it is ALWAYS in your best interest to have your vehicle towed to your auto repair facility for a thorough inspection. What if water has NOT entered the vehicle? If your vehicle was restarted after being in high water, it is still imperative to have your auto repair facility replace all filters and flush all fluids in case of water contamination. On many vehicles, the Transmission Control Module is on the OUTSIDE of the cabin. This needs to be inspected for water intrusion as well. Transmission should be flushed and fluid replaced, typically though the removal of the transmission pan. Water can enter the mechanics of the vehicle through the exhaust system, fouling the catalytic converter and related components. >>Call your insurance company!!<< Flood damage is generally covered by comprehensive insurance, so even if you don't have collision coverage, you may be covered for repairs or replacement. Your insurance company call centers will probably be flooded with claim calls, so it's a good idea to start the process early. Contacting your local Agent to assist you with filing the initial claim MAY reduce extensive hold times in a call center cue, IF your agent is able to take claims in his/her office.

If you experience high water that can not be navigated safely and are unable to turn around towards higher ground, turn off and leave your vehicle. If your engine stalls in high water, DO NOT attempt to restart. When the waters recede, have your vehicle towed to your repair facility so the engine can be checked for water intrusion and started safely.
