Why physical therapy?
The benefits of physical therapy are well-documented.

*Improving endurance and stamina
*Improving range of motion in joints
*Avoiding medications, painful injections, or possible surgery.
*Learning exercises to prevent problems from recurring.
*Restoring function of activities of daily living (ADLs).

Barkman and Smith Physical Therapy was established in 1993 in Bedford, TX, and opened our second location in Irving, TX in 2003. We treat a wide variety of diagnoses. Some of those are the following:
*Orthopedic issues of various joints including the hand and wrist
*Neurological rehabilitation, including stroke after-care
*Spinal dysfunctions at all levels- neck, mid-back, and low back
*Cancer rehabilitation
*Pre and Post Surgical conditions
*Gerontology
*Balance/Falls
*Vertigo/Dizziness
*Work related injuries
*MVA/Car wreck
*Wheelchair evaluations

We are also able to provide the LSVT/BIG program for those struggling with Parkinson's disease. This specific program was developed from discoveries during brain research that explained how performing certain movements in a large, repetitive fashion could indeed impact a person's safety and function through daily activities. It is administered by a certified LSVT/BIG therapist; we have 2, one in Bedford, and one in Irving.

An alternative to the BIG program is our ALARM program. It follows similar concepts to increase safety, reduce fall risk, improve movement coordination as well as speed.

We also have a BalanceTrak (c) program that is utilized for anyone that is generally weak or de-conditioned, lacking good balance control, recovering from stroke, or for those who are falling frequently. This program focuses on improving leg and core strength, spinal mobility, and gait speed/mechanics.

All our balance patients have the option of using these programs with our unique overhead suspension system that is comprised of equipment which is also utilized in rock climbing activities. It is our goal to help you reach your full potential in a safe, fall-free manner.
