Founded in 1936, the Prevention of Blindness Society of Metropolitan Washington® (POB) is the largest local prevention of blindness agency in the United States, dedicated to the improvement and preservation of sight by providing services, education, advocacy and innovation. We serve more than 50,000 people each year in the Washington, metropolitan area including Northern Virginia and Maryland.
POB screens nearly 8,000 children annually for developmental eye problems through the efforts of its Children's Vision Screening program. POB also screens more thousands of adults for glaucoma and vision loss. POB serves thousands of low-income and homeless persons each year at its eyeglasses clinic, in addition to arranging eye examinations for individuals who would otherwise not be able to afford adequate eye care.
