Neuse River Valley Model Railroad Club
In the mid-1970's, a group of model railroaders in the greater Raleigh area informally organized and called themselves the Capital Area Model Railroad Club.
This group met at members' homes to work on layouts or to view slide and film presentations on various aspects of railroading.
This practice is still carried on by sub-groups within the club.
In 1978, the Club started building and exhibiting a modular railroad at shopping centers in the greater Raleigh area.
Increased interest and membership were the result of several successful shows.
By the early 1980's, it became apparent that the Club would have to formally organize in order to more effectively serve the needs of the area model railroading community.
By February 15, 1984, the Club had adopted a constitution, by-laws, and the name NEUSE RIVER VALLEY MODEL RAILROAD CLUB.
Shortly thereafter the club obtained a charter and incorporation papers from the State of North Carolina.
Since that time, every year in November, in support of National Mode Railroad Month, we hold one of the largest model railroad shows in the state at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds.
As of November 2013 the club will have held 29 such shows, with each being better and larger than the previous ones.
This hobby is enjoyed by men, women and children of all ages, who thrill to the sight of miniature trains traveling through scaled down landscapes featuring cities, mountains, plains and other miniature reproductions of the countryside.
Model railroading is a creative family hobby which encourages developing skills requiring manual dexterity in assembling and detailing scale models of equipment, structures, and scenery as well as carpentry, electricity, and electronics.
Model railroading fosters an awareness of our state's and nation’s history and the role played by the railroads in shaping the world in which we live.
