Accurate and informed reporting by West Hawaii Today.
Risk of rat lungworm infection of local produce can be reduced by good farming practices and careful washing of fresh leafy greens. Thanks to Maureen Datta for your voice of reason in today's news article. Know your farmer!! Buy local!!
KAILUA-KONA — “Buy local. It matters.”

The opening footage shows me in conversation with a prospective farmer in front of Adaptations' display at the New Farmer Expo held this past Saturday in Waimea. At the Expo, I learned from Ginger John about a tool called a "Hoedad", recommended as the best tool to remove cane/elephant grass permanently. Ginger John Caverly has created five organic farms on Hawaii Island over forty years. You can discover more about his way of farming for a living from the film "In Search of Balance" ( He has manifested a life of gratitude and abundance in his own way and with his own hands. #gratitudeistheattitude #organic #smallfamilyfarms #gohawaii #farmily #resilience #nature #koreannaturalfarming #indiginousmicroorganisms #soilbiome #humanbiome #tenpercenthuman #ninetypercentmicroorganism #hawaiifarmersunionunited #HFUU #eatyourvegetables #local

Adaptations, Inc. shared Wholesome Wave's post.
From our friends at Wholesome Wave...
"Turns out that subsidizing fruits and vegetables may actually work a lot better than taxing soda. That’s according to a new study funded by the National Institutes of Health and published this month. Researchers found that a 10 percent produce subsidy would prevent or delay more cardiovascular deaths than a mass media campaign to promote healthy eating, a 10 percent soda tax, or a 30 percent fruit and veggie subsidy just for food stamp users."
Study shows a 10 percent fruit and veggie subsidy would result in more than 150,000 “prevented or postponed” deaths due to cardiovascular disease by 2030.
