Martin Co., Inc. was started in 1974 by Mr. & Mrs. CG Martin. Mr. CG Martin was a truck driver delivering a piece of plate steel in Tulsa which was not accepted by the end user. The circumstances allowed for Mr. Martin to obtain title to the plate and he began to sell it himself. Realizing the potential for carbon steel plate business in Tulsa area, Mr. Martin began pursuing a relationship with steel mills to purchase steel direct. Mr. & Mrs. Martin ran the new business from the kitchen table and started with a truck and a few plates of steel. The business grew over time as Mr. Martin developed a strategy for “On Time” delivery in an industry with short lead times and emergency projects calling for short notice to his company. The end user of carbon plate steel are typically Heat Exchange and/or Air X Change types of manufacturers that are repairing or building a unit for an end user. Once the repairs are completed the units are shipped to a chemical plant or refinery. So in the case where and a unit goes down virtually 10’s of thousands of dollars can be lost per day, as such timely delivery of materials for a repair becomes critical. Believing that he could fill the market niche Mr. Martin began to sell steel plate cut to order and delivered on time. Upon the passing of Mr. CG Martin the company became the responsibility of his children who have continued to uphold the same reputation for excellence. Today the company is owned and operated by Joe Martin and his two sisters, Toni Glisson and Connie Martin Flat. CG Martin Co., Inc. has grown into a thriving business with over $3,000,000 in plate steel inventory on stock and growing. The company has been meeting it’s customer needs now for over 43 years and has developed a long relationship with much of the clientele. Carbon plate steel is stocked in 3 different types, 516-70 as rolled, 516-70MT, and A36 structural steel. A typical client will purchase some type of ring or oval, this requires the ability to cut thicknesses of 1/4 inch to 11 inch thick plate depending on the need. Today the company offers not only the sale of steel plate but the custom cutting of steel plate to the specification of it’s customers.
