Founded in 1981, the American Jail Association (AJA) is a national, nonprofit organization whose primary objective is to support those who work in and operate our Nation’s jails. AJA is the only national association that focuses exclusively on issues specific to the operations of local correctional facilities. Our membership of more than 4,000 individuals and agencies represents more than 70,000 jail professionals.
It is these jail professionals who have the responsibility for the humane care, custody, and management of people charged with violating our laws. Each day, and under extremely trying circumstances, these men and women find themselves sorely tested in a work environment where they receive scorn and derision for their loyalty and perseverance.
